The jewelry, designed by indigenous and ethnic artisans from around the world during the 20th century, is a gift from Daniel and Serga Nadler. The New York couple collected the pieces over 30 years during trips to many countries including China, Egypt, India, Mexico and Myanmar. The museum described the collection as "one of the most comprehensive holdings of tribal, ethnic and contemporary jewelry in the world." The museum will present highlights from the collection as part of the exhibition, "Forward Thinking: Building the MAD Collection," beginning Sept. 27, when the museum opens at its new home at 2 Columbus Circle.br> Back to top 12/15/2007 By RAY A. SMITH Saying 'I Love You' With a Metal Alloy With prices for the precious metal having jumped more than 40% since mid-August to a record $900-plus an ounce, some jewelry stores around the country are stocking up on styles that use gold sparingly to hold down prices. The goal is to give shoppers an alternative to the sticker shock of 14-karat or 18-karat gold. Fortunoff is carrying more pieces that feature a mix of gold and less-expensive silver, as well as lightweight "lacey" gold designs. Online retailer Blue Nile Inc. is promoting more silver jewelry and pieces that mix gold with colored gemstones or pearls, as affordable alternatives.Read the entire article. Back to top 03/23/2007 from Randall Wilson LEGENDS ABOUT SILVER AND TURQUOISE JEWELRY In folklore it is said that turquoise stones can bring you luck when it comes to money and romance. The blue green turquoise nugget is also associated with security and healing by some Southwestern Native American Indian tribes. I believe there is something to these mysterious powers, however I am somewhat biased about these topics. The stones, depending upon where they come from can be greenish, dark blue, blue green, sky blue and it may have veining of black or brownish streaks. Turquoise is a mineral in the class of phosphates and it's chemical composition is that of hydrated copper aluminum phosphate and by some considered to be one of the most valuable non-transparent mineral in the Southwestern Native American jewelry trade. Some of the finest specimens of turquoise come from the Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico and also from the country of Iran. Please browse our store for some fine examples of Native American turquoise/silver jewelry items such as turquoise pendants, cuff bracelets, amethyst rings, inlaid money clips in many different styles. There are Hopi, Zuni and Navajo handcrafted jewelry selections and of course friendly advice is always available at no extra charge. Marc "Doc" Robinson of ABI Precious Metals in Carson was at home tuned into one of the shopping networks when a segment on platinum-plated silver jewelry started. Eyes glued to the tube, the alloy mixologist had a revelation. He began screaming at the television, "Put the platinum in the silver!" He yelled this phrase over and over, louder and louder with each repetition, until eventually his wife Inday ran into the room to make sure everything was okay. Not only was everything okay, Robinson thought, but the day just got a little more beautiful: a new alloy was born. From that day, it took about two months of experimentation to get the formulas for Platinum Sterling Silver just right-Robinson created alloys containing 5 percent, 3.5 percent, and 1 percent platinum. But he's the first to admit that combining silver and platinum isn't a novel concept. "Some large manufacturers use between 75 and 90 percent silver, 5 percent platinum, and 5 percent other metals," he says. "What's different about this alloy is that it's 925 sterling silver and platinum, so it doesn't tarnish like traditional sterling does...read the article Originaly published at MJSA's award-winning flagship publication, AJM.
